Top Tips for Caring for Puppies and Kittens

Bringing home a new puppy or kitten is an exciting time for any family. These playful bundles of energy fill your home with joy, but they also need plenty of care to grow into happy, healthy adult pets. Here are our top tips for giving your puppy or kitten the very best start in life.

1. Book a Vet Check-Up Early

Your new pet should visit the vet soon after arriving home. A thorough health check ensures they’re developing well and provides the chance to discuss vaccinations, worming, flea prevention, and diet.

2. Keep Up With Vaccinations

Puppies and kittens are vulnerable to infectious diseases. Vaccination courses usually start from 8 weeks of age for puppies (although can begin earlier) and from 9 weeks of age for kittens – protecting against illnesses such as parvovirus in dogs or cat flu in kittens. Keeping on top of boosters is just as important as their initial course.

3. Stay on Top of Parasite Prevention

Worms, fleas and ticks can affect both young pets and your family. Prevention is far better than cure, and your vet can advise the safest treatments tailored to puppies and kittens. Many owners find a pet health plan helps by spreading the cost of parasite treatments across the year.

4. Feed the Right Diet

Young pets need specially formulated puppy or kitten food to support rapid growth and development. Always feed a complete diet suited to their species, age, and breed. Avoid feeding them leftovers – their tummies are sensitive!

5. Socialisation and Training

Early experiences shape your pet’s behaviour. Gently introduce your puppy or kitten to different people, household noises, car travel and handling. For puppies, basic training such as toilet training and recall should start straight away. Positive reinforcement goes a long way.

6. Protect Their Future

Microchipping is a legal requirement for both dogs and cats. It’s a simple, lifelong way to keep your pet safe if they ever go missing. Neutering is another important step to prevent unwanted litters and protect long-term health.
